Time is NOT On Our Side

This point really needs no explanation nor can it be debated, however, for the purpose of thoroughness I will articulate the argument here. Mike Martz is the single worst manager of the game clock in the NFL. Think about it, how many times have you seen Martz or his quarterback burn up time outs early in the game? How many failed challenges have we seen? The national media had addressed this issue last year and there was some hope that the scrutiny of last year would have reigned the mad Martz in a bit, taught him to be a bit more conservative with the TO’s and challenges…

Well it didn’t take St. Louis fans long to figure out that wasn’t the case. On the first play of the 2005-2006 season, Mike Martz challenged the call that Johnson stepped out of bounds on the 1 yard line (for more on our oh so Special Teams click here). Now the play looked obvious to me even watching it at full speed. When watching the slow motion replay, it was blatantly obvious that the call should not be over turned. Sure, I had the benefit of watching the replay, but so did Martz! They have people in the replay booth for the specific purpose of telling the head coach whether or not to challenge a specific call. And, it was the Rams’ ball, so it isn’t like we were going to hurry and get a play off before we had a chance to challenge the call. Now this is only one example, and you can debate whether or not this one came back to haunt us (I say it set the tone of the game, if not the season, and it wasn’t a good tone) but you can not deny the fact that Martz regularly wastes time outs.

Now, this is not the only way Martz abuses the clock. Think back for a moment to the playoff game against the Carolina Panthers… The game is close… the Rams are threatening… they have staged an amazing comeback…ball in the Rams’ possession and on the Carolina 25…23 seconds left on the clock… what does Mad Mike do? He runs the clock out and lets Wilkins kick the tying field goal rather than taking even one shot at the end zone with his Pro Bowl QB whom he had placed his confidence in earlier in the year by naming him the starting QB over 2 time MVP Warner. Runs out the clock! Game goes to overtime and of course the Rams lose. I could go on all day but that would be a waste of time…
